The Federal Government through its Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program-One (ATASP-1) has constructed an ultra modern rice market for the people of Omor in Ayamelum local government area of Anambra state.
The Rice market, which is located close to the Lower Anambra Irrigation Project (LAIP), is to boost sales of the staple crop in the area.
The Zonal Coordinator of ATASP-1, Adani-Omor Staple Crops Processing Zone, Mr Romanus Egba, made the disclosure in Awka while speaking with newsmen in his office.
According to him, prior to the construction of the market, customers had been finding it difficult to patronize local farmers due to the way they are scattered in different locations that most times was not easy to access.
Mr Egba said the Federal Government considered the appeal by the people and went ahead to construct the rice market with lock up shops where they could park both milled and rice paddy in the event that they did not sell at any time.
He noted that ATASP-1, a Federal Government assisted project funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), also considered that when the Omor Irrigation canal lining is completed, it would guarantee increase in rice production in the zone, hence the need for such market.
Mr Egba said the Federal Government through ATAPS-1 also built similar markets at Ogborji in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra state, Adani in Uzo Uwani LGA and Isu Ehamufu in Isi-Uzo LGA of Enugu State.
