Atlanta 1996 Olympic Soccer gold medal winner, Kingsley Obiekwu says he’s ‘greatly honoured’ after he was unveiled as a Legend by the organisers of the Ifeanyi Ekwueme Tico/Select Preseason Tournament, Newspathfinder.com reports.
The Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold medalist with Nigeria U23 national team otherwise known as Dream Team 1, spoke after he was presented to the media by the organisers of the annual preseason tournament.
“For me, I feel greatly honoured by this recognition”, Obiekwu, who’s fondly called ‘Shagari’ by his admirers said.
“Together with my club, Ingas, we’ve come a long way with Tico/Select Preseason Tournament.
“We’ve participated in all three past editions and looking forward to the 2022 edition which starts on 20th October.
“I’m happy being recognised this way and pray the for the organisers to continue to ensure that the tournament is sustained”.
As a player, Obiekwu played for Udoji United amongst others.
‘Shagari’ had coaching spells at Delta Force, FC Ifeanyi Ubah before arriving at Ingas FC.
Two cities, Asaba and Enugu will host this year’s edition of the annual Ifeanyi Ekwueme Tico/Preseason Tournament scheduled for October 20th through 30th.
Group A matches will hold at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, and will involve Rivers United, Abia Warriors, Niger Tornadoes, Apex Krane, Nnewi United and Bayelsa United among other clubs.
‘Shagari’s Ingas are in group B with Enugu as center.
They will face oppositions from Enyimba, Rangers, Plateau United and others.
