Umunnachi Emerge Champions Of  Dunukofia At 26 Unity Cup

Umunnachi Community on Tuesday, 27th December 2022 emerged champions of the Dunukofia at 26 Unity Football Competition after beating their opponents Umudioka one nil in the final of the football event played at St. Mary’s High School field Ifitedunu.

A solitary strike by Obinna Orjiakor in the 68th minute of the game ensured that Umunnachi would smile home with the grand prize of N500,000 and a trophy as Umudioka settled for the second prize of N300,000 in a colourful and competitive soccer showpiece bankrolled by High Chief (Engr.) Sir Godfrey Chudie Obinabo.

The other four communities in the Local Government comprising of Ukwulu, Nawgu, Ifitedunu and Ukpo got a consolation prize of N100,000 each.

In the Volleyball event for women, Ukpo defeated Ifitedunu by three sets to nil in a game of five to take home the sum of N200,000 while Ifitedunu got N100,000 for finishing as the runners-up. Ukwulu, Nawgu, Umunnachi and Umudioka each got a consolation prize of N50,000.

Speaking to the media, the Transition Committee Chairman of Dunukofia LGA, Hon. Augustine Nonyelum Onyemaobi described the football event as a wonderful one which provided the platform for youths of the six communities of Dunukofia LGA to showcase their sporting prowess.

Onyemaobi pointed out that the football and volleyball sporting events as part of the silver jubilee celebration shows that sports is a unifying factor and has the ability to foster a strong bond, unity and peaceful coexistence in the Local Government.

The Chairman congratulated the winners of the sporting events and also used the opportunity to call on the people of Dunukofia and beyond to be part of the anticipated historic and colourful ‘Dunukofia Silver Jubilee plus’ occasion scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 28th December 2022 at the Local Government Headquarters.
