Policemen attached to Nteje Police Division have arrested fifteen people suspected to be in the habit of vandalizing street light electric cables at the Umueri Cargo Airport, Anambra State.
The vandalised electric cables were used to power street lights mounted at various locations at the newly completed cargo airport.
A police source within Nteje Police Division said that the suspects were arrested last week when they arrived in three tricycles which they had positioned to convey the cables after operations.
However, not realising that some policemen had mounted surveillance within the airport axis after suspecting unusual movement of tricycles along the airport road at between 10: pm and 10:30 at night succeeded in apprehending the suspects who had already loaded the stolen cables into the waiting tricycles.
DPO, Nteje Police Division, Stephen Odok declined to comment on the matter, but referred our correspondent to the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for clarification.
When contacted, Anambra State Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, adding that investigation into the matter was still ongoing.
Anambra State Cargo Airport, Umueri has been without flight and other economic activities as various airports across the country are known for.
The road leading to the airport has remained lonely and deserted with no vehicular or economic activities going on within the area and the surrounding communities.
