The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) on Monday, 9th December 2024 under the leadership of outgoing HOD, Engr. Dr. Kingsley Chidi Nnakwo awarded one-year scholarship worth N500,000 to five indigent students of the Department.
The event took place at the Council/Senate Chamber in the presence of UNIZIK Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu and University Bursar, Mr. Gozie Egwuatu.
The recipients were Caleb Chikamso Ekesiani (300 level student with Registration number – 2022254074), Samuel Chinweokem Iloka (400 level student with Registration number – 2021254052), Uche Mitchell (500 level student with Registration number – 2020254055), Miracle Chidera Madueke (400 level student with Registration number – 2021254007) and Emmanuel Obiora Abuguja (400 level student with Registration number – 2021254059).
In his remarks, UNIZIK Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu congratulated the students for being the lucky ones among many considered for the scholarship award, the Acting Vice-Chancellor admonished the students to make the best out of the opportunity given to them by studying hard which will translate to good grades so as to justify there inclusion in the process.
Prof. Ikechebelu also eulogized the outgoing HOD, Dr. Nnakwo for the initiative by facilitating the process through the Alumni and friends of the Department. The Ag. VC enjoined other scholars to emulate the process by engaging alumni, philanthropists and friends of the university for the growth of the institution and education at large.
Earlier on in his remarks, Dr. Nnakwo informed that the initiative was his brainchild geared towards showcasing of the Department, promoting reading culture, academic excellence and aiding students with financial challenges.
Dr. Nnakwo acknowledged three individuals who were instrumental to the scholarship award such as Engr. Eric Oguama of Total Energies Ltd; Mr. Anthony Chukwunonso Nnakwo, President/CEO of Notex Electronics Nig. Ltd and Mr. Modestus Chibuike Ogidi.
Dr. Nnakwo thanked the Acting Vice-Chancellor for his time despite his busy schedule while promising to continually promote the growth of academics in any capacity given to him.
Also present during the event were scholars from the MME Department such as Engr. Prof. Samuel Mary-Obiorah, Engr. Prof. Nkem Nwankwo, Engr. Prof. Agatha Ijomah, Engr. Dr. Oluwaseyi Taiwo and former Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Engr. Dr. Jeremiah Chukwuneke.
Highpoints of the brief ceremony was presentation of cheques to the students, photo session with the Acting Vice-Chancellor and other members of staff of the institution.
