……We Will Shift Attention To AFL – Coach Yemi
Irked by the spate of mixed results at the continent and league, the People’s Elephant took the bull by the horn in search of their first league point and victory on Sunday with stand in Captain, Somairi Alalibo stepping out to be counted.
Two quick first half goals from Innocent Gabriel and striker, Chijioke Mbaoma at the 14th and 15th minutes of play helped gave Enyimba the lead that helped settle the nerves of the agitating fans.
The away side however got a consolation goal at the 45th minute of play when Kufre Ebong pounced on a ping pong ball in the goal area after Enyimba keeper parried a free kick on to Akwa United attackers.
The last time the Promise Keepers visited Aba, they ran away with a scoreless draw and almost got a similar result after David Philip’s restored parity with a free kick that evaded the home side’s wall of defence and keeper, Bassa Djeri.
Stand in Captain, Alalibo true to his pre match promise stepped out to be counted when he restored Enyimba’s lead through a power driver to send thousands of fans into frenzy securing first point and league win for the defending champions.
Meanwhile, the stand in coach for the league champions, Olarewaju Yemi has reiterated that the team will once again challenge for the trophy but that attention for now will be focused on the AFL.
“We are defending champions and we want to go for the league for the 10th time even though it won’t be easy cause other clubs are not sleeping but we have the players who deliver, all we need to the be more coordinated.
“But for now the focus is on Wydad on Sunday, the next target is on AFL, we want to make Nigeria and Enyimba fans proud.
