The performance of the Super Eagles has been a subject of debate among football fans, with many attributing their struggles to the players themselves.
However, Mr Ebi Ezekiel Egbe, a sports infrastructure expert and pitch construction specialist, believes that the real issue lies with the state of Nigeria’s football pitches.
According to Mr Egbe, the hundred percent natural grass turfs used in Nigerian stadiums are not conducive to the European style of speed football that the Super Eagles players are accustomed to.

“The Nigerian Super Eagles are made up of elite players who have been trained and
conditioned to play the European style of speed football. These players thrive on fast ball transitions, precision passing, and quick reactions — all of which are supported by hybrid turf systems commonly used in Europe”
“However, when these same players return home to play on hundred percent natural grass turfs, which are known to hold back the ball and slow down play, their rhythm and tactical efficiency are disrupted”,
“The result is clear: the Super Eagles often struggle to replicate their club side performances when playing at home on hundred percent natural turf”, he explained
Mr Egbe suggests that Nigeria should adopt hybrid turf systems, similar to those used in European stadiums, to provide an ideal balance between speed, traction, and ball control. He cites the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Morocco, which features a hybrid natural turf system, as a model that Nigeria can learn from.
“This hybrid natural turf provides an ideal balance between speed, traction, and ball control — critical elements that enhance player confidence and safety perception on the field. It allows for fluid ball movement, precise passing, and consistent footing under varying weather conditions”, he said
By adopting similar turf technologies, Egbe believes that Nigeria can create an environment that mirrors the professional standards that its players experience abroad, ultimately enhancing their chances of success in international competitions.
