Spain are world champions again. An extra-time goal from Ferran Torres gave the European champions a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing Spain’s second global title after their 2010 triumph.
La Roja controlled the game from start to finish, registering 20 shots compared to Argentina’s two. The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute when Pedro Porro delivered a cross to the back post that Nico Williams kept alive. Torres was on hand to smash it past Emi Martínez.
Argentina struggled to create chances and did not manage a shot on target until the 115th minute, when Lionel Messi playing his final World Cup match forced a header from Mikel Merino
The match ended in controversy. After the final whistle, tempers flared with Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes at the centre of a brief melee. Paredes was shown a red card after shoving Gavi to the ground, reducing Argentina to 10 men.
Spain’s dominance was rewarded as they lifted the trophy in front of a jubilant crowd, reaffirming their status as one of world football’s powerhouses.
