The Nigerian basketball community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former AJUBA champion and international standout, Lawal “Larry” Garba, a man whose legacy still echoes across generations of the sport.

Garba, who once lit up the court on global stage as the highest scorer at the 1987 World Junior Basketball Championship in Bormio, Italy, leaves behind not just records, but memories of excellence, humility, and service.

His journey through the game, from his early days with Bauchi State Intermediate at Oluyole ’79 to starring for the senior team and representing Nigeria at both junior and senior levels, defined an era of passion and pride for Nigerian basketball.

Beyond the court, Garba remained deeply connected to the sport. Even during his final days in the hospital, members of the basketball fraternity stayed in close contact with him and his family, a testament to the bonds he built over decades.

His commitment extended into administration, where he served meritoriously as Bauchi State Director of Sports after graduating from Ahmadu Bello University, leaving a lasting impact on grassroots and elite sports development before his retirement.

Leading the wave of tributes, Olumide Oyedeji, former NBA star and FIBA ambassador, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Garba as “a true pillar of Nigerian basketball whose legacy will continue to inspire.”

Oyedeji, visibly emotional in his message, extended heartfelt condolences to Garba’s family and the wider basketball community.

“This is a painful loss for all of us. Lawal Garba was more than a player, he was a symbol of dedication and excellence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. To the entire basketball family, we have lost one of our own, but his impact will never be forgotten.”

Garba’s brilliance on the international stage saw him compete against some of the finest talents of his era, including future stars like Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Toni Kukoč and yet he stood tall, carving his own place in history with his scoring prowess and fearless performances.

Affectionately known as “Larry,” he is remembered not just for his achievements, but for his warmth, leadership, and unwavering love for the game.

He is survived by his wife and children, who now carry the legacy of a man who gave his all to basketball and to life.

As tributes continue to pour in, one thing remains clear that Lawal Garba’s name will forever be etched in the story of Nigerian basketball, and his spirit will live on in every court where the game is played.
