Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka earlier in the week joined the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) in celebration of the International Day of University Sports.

UNIZIK was represented by the Chairman, University Sports Committee, Dr. Dereck Orji as the sports loving Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, FAS had hitherto graciously approved the institution’s participation at the colourful and prestigious event.

As part of activities, NUGA celebrated the occasion with a three-day program held at the Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja from Sunday, 18th September to Tuesday, 20th September 2022 with the theme: ‘A Healthy Nigerian Campus’ while the speakers at the ceremony were Tunde Onakoya and Albina Rakhmatullina.

The International Day of University Sports (IDUS) is celebrated on September 20th of each year and was officially proclaimed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO).

The day aims at creating links between Universities and their local communities focused around sport, physical activity and healthy living. Through this event, International University Sports Federation (FISU) aims to involve the multiple University sports stakeholders and member organisations in IDUS activities, not only as a way to promote its sports events but also to create a debate on University sport and to promote FISU values.

IDUS is a platform to exchange ideas, best practices, challenges and opportunities within and through University sport worldwide.

In keeping with this adage, FISU organizes world-class sports and educational events, all with the mission of providing University students with the opportunities to connect and exchange with students from around the world, in a collaborative and competitive environment.
