The Police Command in Anambra state says its Operatives have arrested one armed robbery gang leader ,Okechukwu Okpo along Amaokpala Ufuma expressway.
In a release,the Police Public Relations Officer in the area, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga said Policemen attached to Oko divisional headquarters,acting on a credible information bursted a criminal hide out in an uncompleted building along Oko Ufuma expressway in Orumba North Local government area and arrested the suspect Okechukwu Okpo.
Mr Tochukwu explained that the Operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol, two live cartridges and three plasma television sets from the twenty four year old suspect who hails from Ndobasi village in Ebonyi state.
The Release explained that the criminal gang on sighting the police vehicle, opened fire on the Operatives leading a swift response responded by engaging the armed robbers in a gun battle and arrested Okechukwu while other suspects escaped from the scene .
Preliminary investigations showed that the gang members were responsible for over twenty-five armed robbery, kidnapping and car-snatching incidents that had happened along Oko -Ufuma-Uga -Amaokpala expressway, among others .
The Statement noted that the most recent incident, according to confession by Okechukwu was the attack on a hotel at Ndikelionwu, where a female staff was raped and the gang also made away with three television sets and other items.
The Command said efforts were on to arrest other fleeing gang members.
