The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has confirmed that the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will kick off on August 22 as scheduled.
Speaking at the NPFL 2025/26 pre-season seminar in Lafia, Gusau attributed the league’s new calendar alignment with European clubs as a positive development.
Gusau emphasized that the decision to start the season on August 22 was made to achieve uniformity with European leagues.
“When we came on board, we had no choice but to opt for an abridged league. This paved the way for achieving uniformity, as our league ended in May last season. We will start on August 22 as scheduled.”
He praised the Gbenga Elegbeleye-led Board for amplifying the league’s profile globally and adopting international best practices.
NPFL Chairman Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye assured continued collaboration with stakeholders to promote the league and attract sponsorship.
The seminar brought together NPFL media officers, security personnel, and supporters club representatives for training ahead of the new season .
