Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has expressed confidence in the future of Nigerian sports following the impressive performances recorded at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos.

Speaking after observing events at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Olopade praised the abundance of emerging talents discovered across the country in recent years, describing them as a positive sign for the nation’s sporting future.

“The talents we have discovered across the country in recent years have been enormous. What we need to do now is improve our sporting infrastructure and equip our coaches for better productivity,” Olopade stated.

The NSC boss noted that Nigeria possesses a rich pool of athletes capable of competing favourably on the global stage.

He emphasized that the next phase of sports development should focus on providing world-class training facilities and enhancing the capacity of coaches to ensure athletes reach their full potential.

According to him, sustained investment in infrastructure and human capital development remains critical to transforming promising talents into elite performers capable of winning medals at major international competitions.

Olopade further commended the level of competition and dedication displayed by athletes at the trials, describing the event as an important avenue for identifying the country’s finest talents ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The National Trials have continued to highlight the depth of talent within Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem, with athletes from different parts of the country competing for places on Team Nigeria while showcasing the bright future of the nation’s sports sector.

As preparations intensify for the Commonwealth Games, stakeholders believe the discoveries made at the trials further reinforce Nigeria’s potential to remain a dominant force in international sports, provided the right investments are made in infrastructure, coaching, and athlete development.
