….How Dominic Iorfa’s Administrative Masterclass Transformed Barau FC

By Ayodeji

Barau FC had existed for a few years before gaining promotion to the Nigerian National League (NNL) during the 2024/2025 season, where they played their home matches at Dambatta Township Stadium.

However, their remarkable rise truly began when they finished second in the NNL Super 8 Playoffs in 2025, earning promotion to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

Barau FC started brightly in the NPFL, but before long, technical deficiencies and poor squad depth began to take their toll. The team started losing matches both at home and away and soon found themselves in 19th position, deep in relegation trouble.

There was an urgent need to restructure the team, as the Grand Patron, Senator (Dr.) Barau I. Jibrin, was dissatisfied with the club’s position and struggles.

The turning point came when the club searched for someone capable of reviving its fortunes. Their search led them to a man with an impressive football and administrative background — *Dominic Iorfa,* who had played professional football both within and outside Nigeria and possessed outstanding administrative experience.

Upon assuming office, the former BCC Lions of Gboko player reorganized every department of the club.

He strengthened weak areas with new signings, appointed Coach Eugene Agagbe as Technical Adviser, and improved player motivation.

Soon, the results began to show.
Barau FC started picking up crucial points both at home and on the road. The team climbed from 19th position to finish 8th on the NPFL table — an achievement that amazed followers of the league and was considered by many to be nearly impossible.

Beyond the NPFL, the “Maliya Boys,” as they are fondly called, ended the 28-year dominance of Kano Pillars FC in the State Federation Cup by winning the prestigious trophy for the first time after defeating Bichi First FC 4–2 in an entertaining final.

At the national level in the Federation Cup, Barau FC showed they were not merely participants. The team progressed impressively by overcoming teams such as Zamfara United, last season’s finalists Abakaliki United, and Sunshine Stars U-19 to reach the quarter-finals against Ikorodu City FC.

For a debutant to advance all the way from the Round of 64 to the quarter-finals deserves recognition.

Although the quarter-final match ended 2–2 before proceeding to penalties — and penalty shootouts are often decided by fine margins — Barau FC eventually bowed out.

Nonetheless, great credit must go to the architect behind this remarkable transformation, Dominic Iorfa, whose leadership has steadily moved the club from obscurity to limelight and from underdogs to contenders within such a short period.

As we look ahead, all eyes remain on Barau FC next season. With the progress achieved so far, optimism remains high that the club can challenge for one of the continental tickets and proudly represent Nigeria on the African stage.
