Despite the frustration of a goalless draw against Barau FC in the NPFL MatchDay21 in Aba on Sunday, Enyimba FC’s new Technical Adviser, Coach Deji Ayeni, is preaching positivity.
Coach Ayeni, while speaking to reporters after his side was held to a goalless draw by 10-man Barau FC expresed deep sadness following the negative home result.
“I feel so bad indeed because I believe there are three things about football, to win, draw or lose, but the rationale behind the result is the key reason for the sad expression,” Ayeni said.
Ayeni emphasized the need for psychological support and a winning mentality, citing the team’s anxiety in front of goal and some disputed refereeing decisions as factors that affected the outcome.
“The boys were nervous because they were eager to win the game. The substitutions brought positives, we sustained pressure and created chances, but that anxiety in front of goal affected us.”
Despite the setback, Ayeni remains optimistic about Enyimba’s prospects, pointing to 17 games remaining in the season. “I believe in progression… We have won games with these same players and we are still fortifying the team.”
The match itself was a tense affair, with Barau FC being reduced to 10 men midway through the second half after one of their players was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Onyebuchi Nwaorisa.
However, Enyimba failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage.
