Mrs Sabina Chikere, Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations at the Edo State Sports Commission, is calling for more support and investment in women’s sports. She believes this will enable Nigerian girls to excel and bring glory to the nation.

Mrs. Chikere made this appeal on Saturday during an interview as part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child.

She emphasized the importance of empowering the girl child, noting that women play a vital role in the progress of every society and possess the potential to elevate Nigeria’s standing through sports.

“We are celebrating the girl child and acknowledging their achievements. I am very excited because, in no distant time, we will see more women making their mark in the sporting sector and bringing honour to Nigeria,” she said.

As the Special Guest of Honour at the Cricket Women’s Week, Mrs. Chikere expressed satisfaction with the large turnout of women and girls at the event, describing it as a sign of progress for gender inclusion in sports.

“I’m elated to see such a strong representation of women and girls. Too often, women are pushed into the background, but today we are celebrating them. I hope more sports associations and federations across Nigeria will take inspiration from this initiative,” she added.

She also commended the National Sports Commission (NSC), under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Chief Honourable Bukola Olopade, as well as the Nigeria Cricket Federation, for organizing and supporting the event.

Mrs. Chikere urged young girls in sports, and those aspiring to join, to believe in themselves and remain confident in their abilities.

“I want every girl to have faith in her capabilities. Believe you can do it, stay focused, and success will follow. Kudos to Nigeria, kudos to the girl child — we will conquer the world soon. Happy Girl Child Day!” she concluded.
