The Anambra State Police Command has intensified its efforts to tackle cultism, drug abuse, and other unacceptable societal issues in the state.
According to the state Police Public Relation Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, in a series of operations, the police recovered a large quantity of hard drugs and arrested 53 suspects, comprising 38 males and 15 females.
The Command’s efforts are in response to the increasing cases of moral decay in the society, particularly among the youth. According to the police, the trend is partly attributed to declining levels of parental supervision and poor guidance over their children and wards.
In a recent operation, operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Chiderah Obochi, at Ifitedunu along the Old Onitsha/Awka Road. The suspect was found with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and upon interrogation, he confessed to being a drug runner in Umudioka Village, Dunukofia LGA. He led the team to the house of one Ginika Okeke in Umudioka Village, where 11 bags containing a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) were recovered.
The Command also raided a black spot at Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, following credible intelligence that cultists routinely gathered at the location to perfect plans for their nefarious activities. During the operation, 53 suspects were arrested, comprising 38 males and 15 females. The suspects are currently undergoing screening and profiling, after which those found culpable will be charged to court.
The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the acts of cultism and fake kidnapping incidents, describing them as unacceptable. The Command has attributed the trend partly to the declining levels of parental supervision and poor guidance over their children and wards.
The police command has reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to restoring sanity, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that the state remains safe for all law-abiding residents. The recovered hard substances will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further necessary action.
The Command is working on credible intelligence to identify and apprehend drug dealers supplying these harmful substances. The police command’s efforts are aimed at nipping the incidents of cultism and drug abuse in the bud and ensuring a safer Anambra State for all.
