A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at a burial ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Suspected cultists stormed the scene, opening fire indiscriminately on mourners, resulting in the deaths of four persons and injuring at least 15 others.

Videos circulating on social media showed victims battling for their lives at an undisclosed hospital.

According to Police spokesperson, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, the police received a distress call and swiftly responded to the scene, restoring normalcy and evacuating the victims to hospitals for medical attention.

Preliminary findings suggest the incident was linked to a clash between rival cult groups. The police recovered 16 expended cartridges from the crime scene and have launched a discreet investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident and assured residents of the Command’s commitment to eradicating cult-related violence.

The Command urges the public to remain calm, be security-conscious, and report any suspicious movements or persons to the nearest police formation ¹.
