…… Tasks Geologists on Productivity after Training

By Adaobi Nsofor

Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited (ASSMDCL) has concluded its 2-day training programme for newly employed geologists and IT students.

The General Manager of the company and the team leader for the training, Mr Ebuka Ujubuonu, in an interview, noted that the training served as a means of achieving the mission of ASSMDCL by engaging them in field mappings and data gatherings.

He said that all these were also enshrined in the vision of the Anambra State Government of skill acquisition programmes and Human Resource Development.

Mr Ujubuonu while describing field mappings as the process of creating a geological map by observing, recording, and interpreting geological features, opined that as geologists, they need to be armed with some skills that will make them to stand out in the professional world. He stated that the training was achievable due to the visionary leadership of the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Prof.Charles O.Ofoegbu, who believes in excellence.

In the field trip, which was part of the training, Mr Ebuka Ujubuonu, highlighted that the geologists who were armed with GPS, Handlens, field notebooks etc, carefully observed outcrops, identified rock types, noting their characteristics such as color, texture and mineral composition.

The resource person for the training, a geoscientist and mineral explorationist, Mr Justin Anumnu, explained that the training was about geological field mapping especially in sedimentary rock, which are keys to mineral occurrences.

Speaking further, Mr Justin said that the geology of an area gives a better knowledge on what is expected like the type of rock, minerals present, their arrangements, and the processes that have shaped the landscape overtime. He also noted that basic geologic mapping is key to any kind of geological exploration carried out anywhere in the world.

It is expected that the training will be an enabler for the geologists to deliver result oriented approach for the overall growth of the company and the state at large.
