Enyimba Football Club Chairman, Ambassador Kanu “Papilo” Nwankwo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of over 20 athletes and officials from Kano State in a fatal road accident on their way back from the Gateway Games 2024.
On behalf of Enyimba’s management, staff, and players, Kanu extended condolences to the Kano State Government, the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, the National Sports Commission, and the bereaved families.
In a statement, Kanu described the incident as “a dark and irreparable tragedy” that has left the Nigerian sports community in mourning.
“We are devastated by the loss of young talents and dedicated officials who served their state and country with passion. This is not just Kano’s loss, it is Nigeria’s loss.”
Kanu urged solidarity across the sports community, emphasizing that athletes’ safety and well-being must be paramount.
“This painful episode reminds us of the dangers our athletes face while representing us. We at Enyimba FC stand in support of the Kano State sports fraternity and pray for strength and healing during this difficult time.”
The former Nigerian captain and Olympic gold medalist called on authorities to ensure the safety of sports contingents during national assignments, describing the fallen athletes as “symbols of hope whose light will never be forgotten.”
Enyimba FC joins the nation in mourning and hopes that the sacrifice of the fallen athletes inspires a renewed commitment to safer pathways for Nigerian sports.
