The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has pledged their full support for the Gombe State Inter Schools Athletics and Football Championships.
Mr Tanko Adamu, NAPPS secretary-general for the north-east zone, gave the assurance in his remark at the World Press Conference on Monday in Gombe to herald the commencement of the Championships.
He described the championships as a great opportunity for students to showcase their talent in sporting activities and commended the initiator, Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, for his commitment to talent building and sports development in Gombe and Nigeria in general.
“We are grateful for the opportunity given to our students to display their skills in football and athletics.
“I believe strongly that the one-week-long sporting competition would help boost the physical fitness and mental alertness of participants and also promote unity and spirit of sportsmanship among the schools.
“NAPPS will strongly support these competitions and we commend the financier for his commitment to sports development, not just in Gombe but Nigeria as whole,” Adamu said.
He advised the students to continue to grow their talents and also give their studies deserved attention.
The one week long Championships will see no fewer than 31 schools, including an academy for children at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, competing for honours.
Among the participating schools are 15 private schools and 16 government schools.
The grassroots football and athletics initiative, aimed at creating a new frontier for overall sports development in Gombe and Nigeria, is being bankrolled by Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, the CEO of Green White Green (GWG) Sports Center Limited.
