.….Sets New Record

By Ikenna Nwokedi

Anambra State Contingent at the 8th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba on Tuesday, 17th September 2024 raked in four gold medals to create a new record of 9 Gold Medals surpassing their previous record of 7 Gold medals achieved during the 7th edition of the NYG held in 2023.

Coach Ntephe’s Chess tutored sensation, Chioma Emma-Ibegwu recorded a massive 9 over 9 clearout on the board to win the main event of the Female Classical Category on Board 1. The female Volleyball side on their part defeated Team Kaduna 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-18) to coast home to victory in the team event.

In Athletics, all eyes were on Team Anambra as 100 metres gold medalist Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo did the double taking home the gold medal in the 200 metres event to see off the challenge of Long Jump Gold Medalist, Adaeze Eze who settled for the second position with a Silver medal.

There was an icing on the cake for the very fruitful and eventful day for Team Anambra as the quartet of Daniel Miracle, Adaeze Eze, Ifechukwu Nwankwo and Chigozie Nwankwo took the gold medal in the Female 4×100 metres Relay Final finishing in a time of 48.22 seconds.

There were more medals for Team Anambra as the duo of Gift Iwobi and Chioma Omah settled for Silver medal in the Female Beach Volleyball event having lost to their counterparts from Kaduna State by two sets to one.

Team Anambra came close to winning another Gold Medal in Scrabble but the duo of Victoria Chimamanda Chukwuemeka and Catherine Ubammayie lost to Team Kwara in the Female Doubles Event to settle for the Silver medal.

Emma Ifedibasi capped the day’s event up with a Bronze medal won in the Judo combat fight event.

Team Anambra are hoping for more medals as events wind down at the ongoing 8th NYG with prospects of medals’ haul in Ayo, Kickboxing, Weightlifting, Judo and the anticipated finals of the female 4×400 metres relay race which will feature the quartet of 800 metres Gold Medalist at the games, Chioma Edeh, Chidinma Metu, Ifechukwu Nwankwo and Favour Obiefuna.
