Despite the home defeat suffered by Enyimba football club in the ongoing African Football League, the chairman of the Aba warlords, Nwankwo Kanu is confident the team still has a chance in the championship.
Speaking to journalists after the encounter against Wydad at the Nest of Champions Uyo, the former Super Eagles Captain said though the boys are down following the first leg result, it is not over.
Excerpts….
Q. How do you feel about the game?
A. Well disappointed but that’s football. It is the first game, we have a game on Wednesday which is not bad. It’s open, it’s only one zero. I believe the boys will go there and turn it around.
Q. What is your energy for Wednesday?
A. The boys are down. But we have talked to them. They are not happy, they know they can do better. But like I told them sometimes you want and you don’t get it. It doesn’t mean that it is over. We have another chance which is on Wednesday and l believe and I told them they can do it. Let them go there and make the country proud and make Enyimba proud.
Q. How do you plan to encourage the players?
A. I told them a lot of stories. I told them about football and that it happens. They should go home, relax and drink a lot of water and the word believe comes in. When you say, can you believe it, now they have to prove it.
Q. Where do you think the team needs improvement?
A. I think that’s the coach’s duty but all the same we definitely have to give them some tips. I know the coach is not happy, he is going to do more.
Q. What do you think Nigerians expect?
A. Winning (smiles). Nigerians don’t associate with losing. We know that. When played, there was a lot of pressure that you have to win and it is the same thing with them. Enyimba as a club, all the supporters over there are not happy because they believe they are supposed to win. So what next, on Wednesday they have to do that.
Q. This is a big competition for Enyimba. They have a history of winning the Champions League back to back. What would you tell the players as they go against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday?
A. Just to keep it going. Like you rightly said, this is an opportunity, a big platform for the players to do well and come Wednesday they are going to do well.
