NYG 2023: Team Nasarawa Shines In Opening Ceremony

Asaba, the Delta State Capital, came alive on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, as the opening ceremony for the 7th National Youth Games evolved amidst fanfare and multiple side attractions.

Team Nasarawa joined their counterparts from other States of the Federation and F.C.T., Abuja, for the ceremonial march past at the prestigious Late Stephen Keshi Stadium.

The beautiful ceremony took place before Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, and Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside dignitaries and spectators from different walks of life.

The ceremony heralded the official commencement of the nearly two-week long National multi-sport U-15 fiesta which is being hosted for the first time by a Southern Nigerian State, since its inception in 2013.

Team Nasarawa athletes and officials were adorned in their traditional, breathtaking and eye-catching green and white regalia to the applause and admiration of thousands of spectators inside the packed edifice as background music alternated.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, in his address, welcomed the participants to the host City, emphasizing the importance of the Games to podium success, both now and in the future.

“I sincerely welcome you all to Asaba where the 7th National Youth Games is taking place.

 

“Present here are boys and girls from far away States in the North, East, West and South. Let this game catalyze us to work together, compete together, stay together and be able to understand one another.

“Our hope is that this National Youth Games will assist Government and the people of Nigeria to foster peace and unity with one another.

“I thank the Delta State Government for accepting to host the Games. Our greatest hope is that the Games will proceed peacefully and at the end of the day, the Nation and the host State will reap the benefits therein.”

On his part, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, welcomed participants to Delta State and promised to provide the right atmosphere for the success of the Games and leave historic image in the hearts of everyone.

This year’s Event will feature 35 Sports and to be competed for by more than 5,000 athletes from 35 states.

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Jafaru Ango, and Permanent Secretary, Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi, are both in Asaba to lend moral and psychological supports to the Team to surpass their previous feats.

Team Nasarawa who arrived Asaba on Friday, with a delegation of 118 membership, will participate in 14 out of the 35 Sports.

The 7th National Youth Games will climax on Saturday, 30th September.
