Nigeria has emerged victorious in the second edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region 2 Senior Athletics Championships, surpassing last year’s medal haul.

The team secured a total of 15 gold medals, outperforming Ghana, which won 10 gold medals but had the most medals overall.

Nigeria topped the medal table with 15 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze bringing the team’s total medal haul to 25.

Most of Team Nigeria’s medals were mined in the sprint, quarter miles and a few from throws and jumps.

The athletes from the ‘Land of the upright men’s – Burkina Faso came second ahead of Benin Republic.

The Stallions returned to Ouagadougou with 21 medals made up of 7 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze while Benin Republic secured 6 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals for a total of 16.

Host Ghana, who fielded 30 athletes and kept their World Championship team in a training camp in the USA finished fourth on the final medal table with 3 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze.

Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and the Gambia were also on the medal log of the 2 day competition that attracted over 250 athletes from the West African sub region.
