Team Anambra’s quest for more laurels at the ongoing 8th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) received a massive boost on Sunday, 15th September 2024 as the athletes won three gold medals in various events.
A total of seven medals were recorded on the day with two silver and two bronze medals also secured in the team’s kitty.
Scrabble female sensation, Victoria Chimamanda Chukwuemeka recorded ten wins out of the ten rounds on offer to defeat Sophia Ekeruche of Lagos State and Oluwafenmi Dada of Ekiti State who settled for silver and bronze medals respectively.
Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo ran a season best of 12.24 seconds seeing off the pack of eight girls to win the 100 metres finals in the girl’s category while Adaeze Eze leaped a personal best of 5.95 metres in the High Jump event to take the gold medal.
Two Silver medals came the way of Team Anambra as Chizitelu Oguegbu finished as the second best in the 100 metres backstroke in the finals of the female swimming event while combat fighter, Divine Egede lost to Crown Umeh of the Team FCT to bag a silver medal in the Female Taekwondo Kyorugi -35kg category.
Favour Nwakaeze settled for a bronze medal in female Taekwondo -47kg class while last year’s Gold medalist in the Female High Jump event, Favour Obiefuna ensured she had a podium finish by winning the bronze medal.
The state contingent will look to get more medals in days to come with prospects high in games such as the 4×100 metres relay girls’ finals, 400 metres girls’ finals, 200 metres race, mixed relay races, Beach Volleyball, Female Volleyball, Scrabble, Chess, Cricket, Ayo and Kung Fu.
