The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has officially released the guidelines, modalities, and a comprehensive timeline for its highly anticipated elective congress, scheduled to take place on October 15, 2026, in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
This electoral process is built on the approval and resolutions of the NBBF Extraordinary Congress held on September 26 in Yola, Adamawa State. During that gathering, a seven-member Electoral Committee, chaired by Dr. Lanre Glover, was constituted alongside a three-member Appeals Committee to ensure a seamless and transparent transition of leadership.
To guarantee the credibility of the polls, the elections will be closely observed by official representatives from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
In strict adherence to Article 21 of the NBBF Statutes (2019), the newly elected Executive Board will be highly inclusive. It will comprise a President, Vice-President, and six zonal representatives, joined by statutory delegates from the Referees and Coaches Associations. The board will also feature representatives from the Players’ Union, Military and Paramilitary organizations, Corporate Sponsors, Continental and International Boards, NAWIS, and NAPHER.
The official timeline leading up to the pivotal congress is as follows:
* September 26 : Inauguration of the Electoral and Appeals Committees.
* September 27 : Commencement of the collection of nomination forms by contestants.
* October 6–7 : Submission of completed nomination forms.
* October 8–9 : Screening and clearance of candidates, followed by the publication of the official list of cleared candidates.
* October 7–14 : Elections into other affiliate bodies.
* October 12 : Players’ Representatives Election.
* October 13 : Technical Representatives Election.
* October 13 : Deadline for the submission of appeals against decisions made by the Electoral Committee.
* October 14 : Hearing of appeals and the release of the Appeals Committee’s final decisions.
* October 15 : 2026 NBBF Elective Congress in Abuja.
The October 15 congress is expected to officially usher in a fresh Executive Board tasked with steering the affairs, growth, and development of Nigerian basketball for the next administrative cycle.
