Residents of Aguoye, Umudioka Village, Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, have sent a Save-Our-Souls message to the local, state and federal governments over a fast-expanding gully erosion threatening to sack the community.
The latest incident, which occurred this morning, did not claim any life, but properties valued at millions of naira were destroyed.
A building belonging to one Diamond, popularly known as Eze-Udo, collapsed as a result of the erosion, while another building belonging to the family of Hon. Okwy Nweke was also badly affected.
According to residents, the erosion is advancing rapidly and more houses are at risk of caving in, with fears that families could be displaced from their ancestral homes if nothing is done urgently.
They are calling on the Anambra State Government, the Anambra Road Maintenance Agency (ARMA), and relevant federal intervention agencies to immediately visit Aguoye for an on-the-spot assessment and commence remedial work.
The community particularly appealed to Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo to treat the situation as an emergency to avert further destruction.
Residents said the immediate concern is to halt the erosion, stop further building collapse, and save remaining homes and properties in the area from being washed away.
