The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council has commended the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo for ongoing road construction projects across the state, while urging contractors to improve safety measures to prevent accidents.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its May 2026 Congress held Thursday at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Center, NUJ Secretariat Complex, Awka. The Congress was led by the Council Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu.
The Council noted the “massive road construction projects being executed across the state since the inception of the administration.” However, it urged contractors handling the projects to provide proper diversion signs and necessary safety measures on roads under construction to avoid preventable accidents and loss of lives.
The Congress also expressed deep concern over the indiscriminate construction of speed bumps on tarred roads in the state. It observed that many of the bumps are poorly constructed, damage vehicles, and pose significant accident risks. The Council called on relevant authorities to regulate and monitor the construction of speed bumps to ensure standardization and public safety.
The Union further commended Governor Soludo for appointing the 2026 NUJ Anambra Man of the Year Awardee, Architect Okey Ezeobi, as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, and for reappointing Dr. Ossy Onuko as Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA. The Council attributed the appointments to the duo’s competence and “press-friendly disposition,” and wished them a successful tenure.
Guest Speaker at the Congress, Sir Victor Agusiobo, former Vice President, Southeast Zone of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, reminded journalists that the core essence of the profession remains unchanged. He urged members to act as “watchdogs rather than lapdogs” and to engage in legitimate alternative businesses for economic sustainability in order to avoid quackery and professional misconduct.
Mr Agusiobo also encouraged the Council to establish a cooperative society for interested members.
The Congress commended Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for Anambra Central, Rev. Sagacious Ikezue, for identifying with the Union, and urged him to remain committed to truthful, quality, and impactful representation as promised during his 2027 electioneering campaign.
The Council also applauded the Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps led by Comrade Gab Okpaleze and Professor Ken Ekwealor for educating members on adherence to road signs, traffic lights, and zebra crossings to improve traffic control and safety across Anambra State.
The communiqué was signed by Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, Chairman, and Comrade Okechukwu Onuegbu, PhD, Secretary. The Drafting Committee was chaired by Comrade Emmanuel Okonkwo of ABS Awka Chapel, with Comrade Uzochukwu Ugwunze of State Information Chapel as Secretary, and Comrade Chinyere-Fessy Okoye of NTA Awka Chapel as Member.
The Congress reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to promoting professionalism, good governance, and constructive societal engagement for the sustainable development of Anambra State and Nigeria.
