National Institute for Sports DG/CEO Comrade Philip Shaibu on Wednesday joined dignitaries, clergy and faithful at St. Paul Catholic Church, Benin City, to mark the 20th Episcopal Ordination anniversary of Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze.

The ceremony, held on April 22, 2026, drew prominent personalities from across religious and public life, including the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, His Lordship, Dr. Gabriel G. Dunia, alongside other bishops, priests, and religious.

While the occasion marked Archbishop Akubeze’s two decades of episcopal service, Shaibu used the opportunity to highlight the Archbishop’s enduring impact as a spiritual shepherd, not only to the Catholic faithful but to the wider Christian community.

He noted that Archbishop Akubeze’s leadership has consistently provided moral clarity, guidance, and stability in times of social and moral challenges.

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State described the Archbishop as “a true shepherd whose voice has continued to inspire hope, strengthen faith, and promote unity among believers,” adding that his ministry has transcended the pulpit to influence lives across different strata of society.

According to him, Archbishop Akubeze’s commitment to truth and service has made him a moral compass for many, emphasizing that his teachings and interventions on national and societal issues have contributed significantly to peace-building and ethical leadership.

Delivering the homily, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji emphasized the sacred responsibility of the episcopal office, describing it as a call to sacrifice and authentic service. He cautioned against the temptation for Church leaders to become mere figureheads, urging them instead to remain true witnesses to the Gospel through action and humility.

“The office of a bishop is not ceremonial but deeply sacrificial,” Archbishop Ugorji stated, emphasizing the need for steadfast dedication to truth and service.

Re-echoing the message, NIS Boss reaffirmed that Archbishop Akubeze has, over the years, embodied the true essence of episcopal leadership through humility, courage, and unwavering dedication to his calling.

He commended the Archbishop’s ability to bridge the gap between the Church and society, describing him as a unifying figure whose influence resonates beyond denominational lines, even as prayed for continued strength and wisdom for the Archbishop.
