The 3rd National Para Games came to an end a few days ago in the capital city of Abuja.

The event marked more than just the end of a competition. It signalled a new era of visibility for special athletes in Nigeria.

For the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon Bukola Olopade, the success of these games was a deeply personal victory in his lifelong mission as a “champion of the Unseen”

Long before his appointment as DG, Olopade was a foundation pillar for Para Sports in Nigeria, notably serving as the president of the Nigeria wheelchair basketball Federation.

He also held a continental role as the vice president of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (Africa). His tenure in Nigeria preceded the current administration led by Seyi Johnson.

Hon. Olopade led the foundation structures that his successor was expected to build upon.

His greatest achievement was the promotion of Para Sports and inclusion.

He championed inclusive sports development, giving visibility to athletes with disabilities. He most importantly helped position wheelchair basketball as a recognised competitive sport in Nigeria and just not a recreational activity.

Olopade agitated for the inclusion of Para wheel chair as a sports festival sport.

Hon. Olopade’s passion and love for Para Athletes motivated him to personally contribute funding about the N2.2m prize pool to boost athletes’ motivation and competition standards.

Hon. Olopade’s return to Para sports arena in his current capacity as the DG of the National Sports Commission has brought an unprecedented level of empathy and technical expertise to the Commission’s leadership.

Hon. Olopade’s signature :

The “Athlete – First”.

Throughout the duration of the 3rd National para Games, which saw over 2,500 athletes nationwide compete across 15 disciplines, the DG’s presence was overwhelming on the sidelines.

His interactions with the athletes showcased a leader who speaks the language of the locker room.

“For too long , our Para athletes have been the Unseen giants of Nigerian sports – consistently winning medals globally, but often fighting for basic recognition at home , Olopade stated.

” Having walked this journey with them from the federation level, i know that what they need is not pity , but parity.

“We are here to ensure they are seen , heard, and rewarded equally.”

Strategic Inclusion

Under the ” Renewed Hope Agenda”

Under Hon. Olopade’s direction, the 2026 Para Games set a new benchmark for administrative excellence.

Welfare Reform :

The DG prioritised the immediate disbursement of allowances and ensured that prize categories matched those of able bodied National festivals.

A legacy of consistency :

The conclusion of the games reinforces the DG’s standing as a leader who has stayed true to his roots by bridging the gap between his past advocacy and his current administrative power.

Hon. Olopade is proving that the NSC is no longer just a regulatory body, but a home for every Nigerian athlete , regardless of their physical challenges.

As the “Champion of the Unseen ” Hon Olopade’s message to the nation is clear : In the new sports Commission, no talent will be left in the shadows.
