Nigeria’s Super Eagles got their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group C campaign off to a winning start, defeating Tanzania 2-1 in a closely contested match.

However, the victory was not without its concerns, as the Tanzania side exposed defensive cracks that will require urgent attention from the Super Eagles’ coaching staff.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 36th minute, rising high to head home Alex Iwobi’s well-delivered cross. The goal came after sustained pressure from the Super Eagles, who dominated possession and dictated the tempo of the game.

However, Tanzania refused to be intimidated, and their intensity and quick breaks unsettled the Nigerian defense. The East African side’s efforts were rewarded shortly after the restart when Charles M’Mombwa struck to draw level.

But Nigeria’s response was swift and decisive. Just two minutes after conceding, Ademola Lookman restored the lead with a composed left-footed finish, showcasing the individual quality that has come to define the Super Eagles.

Despite finishing with 59% possession and creating more clear chances, Nigeria’s discomfort was evident. Tanzania’s swift transitions and pressing exposed gaps in the Super Eagles’ defense, and it was clear that the team will need to tighten up if they are to go deep in the tournament.

In the closing stages, Nigeria leaned on experience rather than flair, tightening up defensively and managing the game to prevent a late scare. The backline held firm, but the need for greater concentration was evident.

While the three points were secured, the win served as a warning that stronger opponents will surely target the cracks exposed by Tanzania. The Super Eagles will need to work on their defensive vulnerabilities if they are to achieve their AFCON ambitions.
