Anambra Council Poll Primary Set For This Month

Preparations by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) for the council poll has kicked off in earnest.

According to ANSIEC’s, all party primaries for the poll which would usher in the 2026 Local Government Election will hold between Dec 18, 2025, and Feb 16, 2026.

The chairman of the Commission, Genevieve Osakwe who announced the schedule and timetable in a meeting with the leaders of all registered political parties cautioned them to stick to the guidelines.

She stressed that those who conducted any part of the process outside the Commission’s knowledge would not be recognised.

The chairman told them that all party primaries would be closely monitored by the Commission.

I the timetable, political parties will collect and submit nomination forms within February, and screening of candidates will take place from late February and early March.

While the final list of candidates will be published on April 1, 2026.

This signals the official commencement of political campaigns all over the state.

The election holds August 29, 2026, across the 21 local government areas of the State.

Osakwe appealed to parties to be discreet in their choice of candidates.

She called for issues-based campaigns. And vowed that ANSIEC would ensure a level playground for all participants.

Political parties, IPAC and other recognized stakeholders attended the meeting and welcomed the timetable, pledging their cooperation with the Commission for a smooth, peaceful and credible election.
