The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has kicked off its 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Rivers State, calling on road users to adopt safe driving habits and reduce road crashes.
According to the Corps Marshall, Mr Shehu Mohamed during a Town Hall meeting held in Port Harcourt recently , the campaign aims to sensitize road users on the importance of safety and responsible behavior while on the highways.
He said that this year’s theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” emphasizes the need for road users to avoid distractions while driving, such as mobile phone usage, eating, or arguing with passengers.
Statistics revealed that between January and September 2025, a total of 7,715 road traffic crashes occurred nationwide, resulting in 3,915 fatalities.
The Corps Marshall informed that the FRSC has strengthened its proactive interventions, including advanced operations, public enlightenment campaigns, and the use of technology in road safety management.
He urged road users to utilize the FRSC Mobile App to report reckless driving and access safety features.
In commending President Tinubu, he said that his initiatives at infrastructure development are significantly improving national mobility, expanding connectivity, and promoting inclusive economic growth. These progressive strides provide crucial support to road safety efforts across the country.
Mr Mohammed appreciated the Rivers State Government for its commitment to road safety and infrastructural development, noting that strategic corridors such as the Port Harcourt Dual Carriage Ring Road and Trans-Kalabari Road have improved access and strengthened regional integration.
“I wish to appreciate Rivers StateGovernment for its unwavering commitment to the safety and security of citizens. His Excellency, Sir SiminalayiFubara, the Executive Governor of Rivers State has demonstrated capacity for infrastructural development including road constructions. Strategic corridors such as the Port Harcourt Dual Carriage Ring Road, Trans-Kalabari Road, Opobo Road, and the Emohua-Tema Road have improved access and strengthened regional integration”,
“Furthermore, critical routes including the Buguma-Abalama-Tema-Degema-Abonnema Road, Okania-Ogbogoro Road, and the Elele-Umudioga-Egbeda-Ubimiri-Ikiri-Omoku Dual Carriageway are facilitating safer and more efficient movement of people, goods, and services. These projects, together with extensive internal road construction and rehabilitation across the State, reflect proactive governance that places premium value on roadway efficiency, public convenience, and the preservation of lives”, he said.
He also acknowledged the strategic guidance of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, His Excellency, Senator George Akume, whose supervisory leadership he said continues to strengthen institutional framework for improved road safety administration and management.
According to the FRSC boss, the representation of the media, security agencies, transport unions, professional groups, and civil society organisations during the meeting reflects a unified stance against road traffic fatalities saying that collective action of all stakeholders will determine whether the highways remain channels of national prosperity or avenues of premature death.
The campaign will feature sensitization exercises, roadshows, mass advocacy, and stakeholder engagements to promote road safety awareness and reduce road crashes during the festive season
