Nnamdi Azikiwe University has taken a decision over the death of Isabella Ajana, a year one student of Faculty of Law

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Carol  Arinze-Umobi, communicated the decision in a statement  where she revealed that the doctors, nurses, and security personnel on duty at the University’s Medical Centre on the day of the incident have been suspended for three months pending the completion of investigations.

Late Miss Isabella Ajana

The suspension is part of the university’s response to the investigation committee’s report into the circumstances surrounding Ajana’s death.

The report highlighted several concerns, including the delayed response of the medical staff and the security personnel’s inability to access the student’s accommodation due to the Supervisor’s custody of the spare key.

The university has demanded that the management of ELMADA Hostel, which is jointly owned but privately managed, sack the Supervisor on duty who was responsible for the spare key.

The university said it will re-evaluate its relationship with ELMADA Hostel, demanding international best practices in students’ accommodation facilities.

“I wish to assure the University Community and general public that we are committed to upholding the highest standard of care and safety for our students in line with my vision ‘feeling the pulse of the students, staff and finding solutions’.” Prof Arinze-Umeobi said

Prof. Arinze-Umobi extended her deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, assuring them that the university will do everything possible to prevent such incidents in the future.

The university’s swift action demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students. The incident has raised concerns about the management of students’ accommodation facilities and the response of medical staff in emergency situations.
