The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games 2024, kicked off with great fanfare in Ogun State.
The event drew dignitaries and athletes from across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory. Anambra State’s Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, was among the notable attendees, and his presence significantly boosted the morale of Team Anambra.
Governor Soludo urged the athletes to stay focused and embody the spirit of excellence, emphasizing the importance of discipline, teamwork, and self-belief.
“This is not just a competition; it’s a chance to show the world what Anambra is made of,” he said. “Stay focused, remain the ‘A’ state that you are, and bring home the medals.” The Governor’s words were met with cheers from the athletes, officials, and supporters.
Governor Soludo also commended his host, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, for the warm hospitality and exceptional organization of the festival.
He praised the Federal Government’s continued investment in youth and sports development, describing it as essential to national cohesion and future growth.
The Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Hon. Patrick Estate Onyedum, rallied the athletes with a passionate speech, urging them to reward Governor Soludo’s presence with a stellar performance.
“The Governor has come all the way to cheer you on. Give him the perfect gift—go out there and win! Don’t let Governor Soludo down, and don’t let Ndi Anambra down,” Onyedum declared.
The Commissioner for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. Patrick Aghamba, echoed this sentiment, praising the team’s preparation and unity.
The National Sports Festival features thousands of athletes competing in various disciplines, including athletics, taekwondo, wrestling, table tennis, and more.
With Governor Soludo leading from the front and robust support from sports authorities, Team Anambra enters the festival as strong contenders for excellence.
Their participation is being closely watched, with high expectations placed on them to deliver medals and inspire a new generation of sporting talent.
