The Management, technical crew and players of Ijele Sports Club have joined the football community in mourning the death of two Nigerian greats of the 1980 Eagles, Christian Chukwu and Charles Bassey.
The General Manager of Ijele FC, Barr. Ferdinand Naza deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary football coaches and former Green Eagles heroes described their death as a great loss to the football family.
Both legends who died Saturday, 12 April 2025 were in the 22-man squad that became Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations champions, after a 3-0 defeat of Algeria’s Fennecs at the National Stadium, Surulere on Saturday, 22nd March 1980.
Captain Christian Chukwu ‘Chairman’ a renowned defender later went on to coach the national team while clinical forward Charles Bassey coached Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus etc where they made a lasting impact on Nigerian football.
Barr Naza praised both legends’ dedication, passion, and commitment to the sport, which made them role models for many young players. “They were exceptional players and coaches who brought glory to Nigerian football,” he said
Chairman Christian Chukwu was a giant of Nigerian football. His contributions to the game, both as a player and a coach, are immeasurable. He was a true legend of the game, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers. The same goes for his team mate Charles Bassey. Their era was spectacular”,
“Their death is a reminder that we should cherish the time we have with our loved ones and appreciate their contributions to our lives”,
“While we take solace in the fact that they both lived exemplary lives, we have to celebrate the service the legendary eagles have given us and call on all players of Nigerian extraction to emulate them”, he said
On behalf of Ijele FC, Barr. Naza extended condolences to the families, friends, and admirers of Christian Chukwu, Charles Bassey wishing them eternal rest. “May their souls rest in peace, and may their legacies continue to inspire us all,” he prayed.
