Human Rights Commission in Anambra State has highlighted readiness to increase it’s quest for the fulfilment of Human Rights by providing unique platforms of collaboration for people via the Commission..
This was the basis for discussion at a Town hall meeting on the promotion and protection of Human Rights Tripartite partnership organized by the Commission with supports from it’s partners.
In his opening speech, the special Adviser to the Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission, Dr Hillary Ogbonna expressed his excitement on the response of the participants And explained extensively the mandate of the human Rights Commission In the country.
He called for a synergy to work together for Ndi Anambra by using the powers of the mandate of the commission because the power that is not used for the betterment of the people is worthless as a piece of paper.
Barr Ogbonna said that Anambra is a state of concern because of the security issues in the state and that’s why under the tripartite partnership of the commission Anambra is one of the pilot States and this calls for capacity to build their office in the state.
He further called on ndi Anambra to take care of the human rights of the people as an institution that will provide the Human Rights of the masses emphasizing that they tend to build partnership with relevant stakeholders like the Media, civil society, religious leaders, community leaders, Women leaders in the state, Youths Groups and labour leaders in ensuring that the rights of the citizenry are protected.
Lecture Series from Miss chioma Okoli and Mrs Anthonia Nwabueze centered on the Tripartite partnership of the commission, NHRC legal policy and Enforcement Powers, Monitoring and Investigation, including it’s complaints process and procedures.
They listed some of their channels of complaints to include Toll free lines, Twitter, website’s, Email address and physical complaints.
Mrs Anthonia explained basic dashboards of the commission in Anambra State in which she listed sexual and gender based violence, abandonment of children,rape, defilement, Assault, torture and cultism on the rise in Anambra State.
Particpants and stakeholders were called upon to suggest ways of improvement in protecting the rights of the people in the State.
Reacting the State coordinator human rights Commission in Anambra State Barr Maduforo Obinna explained that they have been working assiduously with the media on spreading the news and mandates of the commission and urged other stakeholders to join the moving train.
He called for more funding from the government to the commission as described National human rights Commission as the least funded federal to government institution.
Participants were drawn from religious groups, Youth Groups, ASATU, Women Groups and the Media amongst others.
