The National Executive Committee (NEC), Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has relieved some national officers of their appointments.

This was contained in a press release signed by the Secretary General of the Association, Mr Ikenna Okonkwo and made available to the media.

According to the release, the two officers Mr Gabriel Nwanetanya and Mr Ajayi Obe were replaced by Mr. China Acheru of Wazobia Fm, SWAN Rivers State chapter and Mr. Biodun Ogundipe of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC).

The press Release reads:

PRESS RELEASE

*Nwanetanya, Ajayi Relieved of SWAN National Appointments, 2 New Ex-officio members, Treasurer Emerge*

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has relieved Mr. Gabriel Nwanetanya and Mr. Ajayi Oluwaseun-Obe of their appointments as Ex-Officio members.

A statement from SWAN National Secretariat in Abuja after NEC’s emergency meeting revealed that the failure of both Nwanetanya and Ajayi to assist the President and NEC in carrying out its statutory functions in line with Articles 11 (i) led them to lose their positions.

Both former National Officers were earlier appointed after the emergence of the incumbent SWAN administration led by Mr. Isaiah Benjamin in 2023.

“Your unstatutory steps and actions which have brought the Association to disrepute repeatedly also necessitated the decision of NEC.

“With this, you are expected to handover any form of Association’s document or property relating to your previous position to the SWAN National Secretariat within seven days of receiving this information.

“While assuring you of our highest regards, the SWAN President particularly wishes you all the best in your future,” part of the letter terminating their appointments on February 23, 2024 read.

Consequently, Mr. China Acheru of Wazobia Fm, SWAN Rivers State chapter and Mr. Biodun Ogundipe of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC), Ogun State Chapter have emerged as new SWAN National Ex-Officio members.

Also, Mr. Amusan Olufemi Ayorinde of the DAAR Communications PLC, Oyo State Chapter has been appointed as the National Treasurer.

The new appointments already ratified by NEC, take effect immediately.

Ikenna Okonkwo

Secretary-General, SWAN
