The Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated Nigeria’s Weightlifters – Rafiatu Folashade Lawal and Adijat Adenike Olarinoye for making the country proud at ongoing 2024 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt.

While Rafiatu won three Gold medals in various categories, Adijat clinched available three Silver medals in her weight categories at the competition which also serves as the 2024 Paris Olympic Qualifier.

Speaking through a press statement by the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, said their sustained victories after similar exploits last year will encourage others competiting at the Championship and beyond to put in their best.

He said, “Nigeria has been on the lead in combat sporst like Weightlifting and Wrestling in recent times. Sustaining the gains of the past year is really commendable.

“Efforts should now be channelled to other sporting events in the year particularly at the coming Olympics in Paris. There’s need to galvanise all the support to enable the qualification of more Nigerian athletes across the various sports.”

Talking about the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the number one Sport Writer in Nigeria enjoined the Super Eagles to push harder against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semi-final match.

“Good enough, the Nigerian senior men team have shown character and determination so far in the tournament. What remain now is for them to remain resolute and ensure victory till the end.

“We sincerely commend the federal government for giving the team necessary supports which has propelled them so far. We also appreciate the corporate organisations, individuals and the Bayelsa state government for their encouraging supports.

“We are still confident of victory beyond the semi-final to the final,” he said.

The SWAN President also urged dedicated Sports Writers to keep on their good work before and during the AFCON with an assurance that he will keep pushing for improved welfare.
