The Nnamdi Azikiwe University male volleyball team today moved into the semi finals at the ongoing South East University Games after technical calculations favoured them against UNN.

Rising from 0-3 defeat suffered in the hands of ESUT, the UNIZIK Giants began their battle against UNN under pressure but were able to survive the heat as the game ended 25+19, 13-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-12 to gain the all important victory.

After the game the team had their joy extinguished when they were told that the victory did not count as they lost their first group match and that odds favour UNN who lost their two matches to ESUT and UNIZIK (2-3, 2-3) in the round robbin matches with points.

It was believed then that having gernerd points from the two losses, UNN have better standing than UNIZIK who lost one match with a huge margin without a point and one win

The decision was rejected by the officials of UNIZIK and the National Body of volleyball was invited for proper interpretation that victories count first which gave UNIZIK the nod to move to the semis.

In other matches played today, IMSU male defeated Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alaike 3-0 while ESUT female carted home the bronze medal after defeating IMSU 3-0 in the third place match.

UNIZIK will play against FUTO in the first semi finals while ESUT will play against IMSU. The finals will be decided tomorrow.

In the basketball male event, Nnamdi Azikiwe University thrashed Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alaike 41-25, and UNN defeated Michael Okpara University of Agriculture 37-28 while in the female category, ESUT spanked UNIZIK 21-7.

In football, UNIZIK ladies completed their group unbeaten run with a 3-0 win against FUTO.
