Three students of a senior secondary school at Okpuno, Awka South LGA, owned and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Awka are reported dead as a result of lightning.

The incident according to eyewitness account happened on Saturday at the school playground.

It was gathered that the boys were playing under the rain when the lightning struck. The said players who defied the rain to play were earlier practicing for a tournament.

“But the coach had ended the training when the rain was threatening and the official ball taken out. Minutes later they went back again to play”,

“The rain began around 5pm and before 5.30pm, the lightning mixed with heavy claps of thunder sent nine of them faced down. It was a difficult scene to describe”,

“They were quickly rushed to Regina Ceili hospital where three of them died and the other six are said to be recovering.

Police PPRO in Anambra state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga when contacted, said the incident had not been reported to the police.
