Management of Blessed Wisdom Model School, Federal Housing Estate, Onitsha, Anambra State has tendered unreserved apologies to state government over case of battered two-year-old pupil, Ifechukwu Egbuninwe.
The management has also accepted to take responsibility of ensuring full recovery of the child as well as other responsibilities.
The apology came exactly one month after state government announced immediate closure of the school over what it termed sheer impunity, adamancy and insensitivity of the school’s management to human life.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh in a statement said: “The proprietress of the school never reached out to the parents and/or guardian of the child to inform them of her injury nor was first aid treatment administered to her when she sustained the said injury.
“Again, the said proprietress failed and/or refused to reach out at any point to the family of the victim to ascertain her welfare.
“Instead, they continued carrying on their school business as if the life of the said Ifechukwu Davida Egbuniwe meant nothing.”
Chuma-Udeh, who noted that the matter would not have lingered if the Proprietress had apologized immediately, insisted the school would be reopened only if the Proprietress apologized to government and victim’s family over her actions.
“I want to state categorically that the school will remain shut except the woman explains to us what happened to this poor child and gets along with the child’s family to ensure she has a holistic healing, assuring two families and Government that everything is alright,” she said.
But addressing newsmen on Wednesday, the School’s Proprietress, Nkamuigbo Ifeyinwa said the matter had been put to rest following her apology to the government.
She said, “To the glory of God we’ve accepted to take the responsibility of making sure the child is fully okay and we’ve accepted further responsibility for the child.
“By the special grace of God, the matter has been resolved amicably. I’ve apologized which has also been documented.”
Nkamuigbo however denied the purported version of another apology letter by the school’s lawyer mandating the state government to open the school with immediate effect.
