The Anambra government says it would give the teeming youths in the markets the opportunity to explore career chances in sports .
The chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission ASSDC, Chief Patrick-Estate Onyedum said this while inaugurating the Main Orgainising Committee of the maiden Anambra Traders Sports Championship in Awka on Thursday.
The 20-man committee is made up of members from the sports commission and representatives of traders’ leadership.
Chief Onyedum said the traders sports championship which was being organised by ASSDC in conjunction with Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA) would feature three games including football, tennis and table tennis.
He said the competition tentatively scheduled to hold in between October and November this would be open to all the major markets under ASMATA
According to him, school sports concluded recently was a huge success with a good number of budding talents discovered adding that the platform would also be made available for traders.
The sports boss informed that Gov. Soludo has decided to bring in the markets in his sports development programme to accommodate traders who are very critical in the state.
“These games have been carefully selected because of the health and employment opportunities in them, so you are going to play for healthier living, play for leisure and also play for economic reasons.
“Apart from the prize money to be won, there is also an opportunity for hidden young talents in the markets to be spotted and mentored to become professional sportsmen, so bring out your best,” he said.
He called for full cooperation of the ASMATA, the umbrella leadership body of all markets in Anambra.
On his part, Emeka Unaegbu, the Public Relations Officer of ASMATA said they were excited about the proposal and ready to give all their support to make it a success.
