Anambra Head Of Service Calls For Advancement Of Forensic Science In Nigeria
The Head of Service of Anambra State, Barr. Theodora Okwy Igwegbe, has called for the advancement of forensic science in Nigeria.
The call was made recently during an International Conference on Forensic Science and Criminal Justice held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State.
In delivering her goodwill message as a special guest of honour, Barr. Igwegbe highlighted the importance of forensic science in the criminal justice system, stating that it provides valuable evidence that can be used to support or refute claims made by suspects, victims, and witnesses in trial courts.
She also emphasized the need for forensic science to be properly funded and supported in Nigeria to ensure that it keeps up with the rapidly evolving technologies and techniques.
Barr. Igwegbe also highlighted the need for greater collaboration between forensic scientists, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system.
She stressed that by working together, these groups can help to ensure that forensic science is used effectively and efficiently in the generation, analysis and management of data for the purposes of credibility in investigation and prosecution of crimes.
She went on to express her regret that Forensic Science is advancing in the countries across the globe, especially in the U.S.A., Europe, Asia and other developed climes while the story is different in most countries of Africa of which Nigeria is one.
She said that currently, proficient and skilled forensic experts are grossly inadequate and there is no elaborate legal framework for the practice of Forensic Data Management and handling. There’s also, little or no adequate Forensic Laboratory facilities in Nigeria where forensic data can be processed, generated and preserved for use at the relevant times.
According to her, the recent election petitions and other cases have made it imperative that the government and other stakeholders should create enabling environment for full application of Forensic Science in all aspects of the citizens lives as Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind while the world moves on.
