Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka had earlier in the year received approval to set up an institute for Maritime Studies.

This disclosure was made by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu during an interview with reporters at his office.

Prof. Ikechebelu stated that officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) had in the second quarter of the year precisely on Thursday, 7th April 2022, came into Anambra and interfaced with the University Management to assess the institution’s readiness towards commencing an academic programme in Maritime sector and see the infrastructural development in place for the laudable programme.

Prof. Ikechebelu revealed that funds have been approved by the Federal Government for the establishment of the Maritime Institute at Onitsha as the city is a coastal area with positive variables such as population and existing market in place as well as maritime activities already ongoing.

Prof. Ikechebelu disclosed that UNIZIK will major in Maritime Management, Maritime Engineering, Maritime Biology and Transportation Studies.

The scholar stated that upon commencement of the academic programme, the institution will create capacity by enhancing professionalism and expertise for its candidate by offering certificate, degree and post graduate programmes at the institute.
