Nigeria’s leading discus thrower, Ebubechukwu Vincent Ugwoke, has injected N575,000 as prize money for the men’s discus event at the Athletic Heat 10th Anniversary Meet.
The meet is scheduled to hold on November 7, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos.
Ugwoke, a two-time national champion and bronze medallist at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a personal best of 63.89m, is Africa’s second-best discus thrower in 2026.
His sponsorship will reward the top four athletes, with the winner taking N250,000, second place N150,000, third place N100,000, and fourth place N75,000.
Athletic Heat Chief Executive Officer, Ese Oguma, lauded the gesture, noting that Ugwoke specifically wanted the fourth-place finisher to go home with an amount equivalent to Nigeria’s minimum wage.
Oguma said the initiative would motivate athletes to put in their best performances and encourage more private and individual support for Nigerian athletics.
The meet will mark Athletic Heat’s 10-year anniversary and also serve as a build-up for athletes preparing for the National Sports Festival.
Registration is ongoing on http://A3Tickets.com and closes on October 24, 2026.
