Nigeria’s D’Tigress may have suffered an early exit from the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup following defeats to South Korea, Hungary, and France, but the campaign represents a massive leap forward for Nigerian basketball. Behind the scoreboard lies a story of unprecedented investment, global exposure, and long-term ambition orchestrated by the Musa Kida-led Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF)
To truly appreciate the magnitude of the NBBF’s recent efforts, one must look at the context of the team’s remarkable journey. D’Tigress had built an intimidating legacy, remaining absolutely unbeaten on the African continent since 2017. They also shattered global ceilings by reaching a historic quarter-final at the 2018 FIBA World Cup in Spain, becoming the first African team ever to achieve that feat.
However, their astronomical rise was abruptly cut short by Nigeria’s temporary withdrawal from international competitions. This unfortunate hiatus cost them their hard-earned spot at the 2022 FIBA World Cup, severely affecting the team’s rhythm, momentum, and core cohesion.
Recognizing the urgent need to rebuild that lost synergy and bridge the gap, the NBBF did not wait until the eve of the 2026 tournament to begin preparations. Instead, they executed a rigorous, global preparation tour. D’Tigress tested themselves against elite WNBA franchises (Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, Indiana Fever) before embarking on a demanding series of warm-up games in China and Spain. This deliberate exposure to diverse basketball philosophies and high-level pressure provided the team with the invaluable global experience required to re-establish their footing.
Under the guidance of Coach Rena Wakama—who previously led the team to continental glory and a historic Paris 2024 Olympic quarter-final—the squad continues to build a resilient, competitive culture. Despite the early exit, players like Amy Okonkwo, Murjanatu Musa, and Ezinne Kalu showcased world-class character, fighting back fiercely in difficult moments and proving they belong on the world stage.
Typical of any great team, like the D’Tigress, the World Cup in Berlin was just a bad day in the office that all great team experience at one pint in time or the other . They simply had a horrible World Cup that must be forgotten in a hurry. You can never be winners all the time !
