As the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Ugboaja has not only redefined hospital management and healthcare delivery but has also positioned NAUTH as one of the fastest rising and leading tertiary health institutions in Nigeria.
Since assuming office, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON has demonstrated extraordinary leadership capacity, administrative brilliance, and uncommon dedication to service. Through strategic planning, innovative thinking, and relentless hard work, he has transformed NAUTH from a conventional teaching hospital into a rapidly expanding center of medical excellence, innovation, research, and healthcare modernization.
One of the most remarkable achievements under his administration has been the aggressive infrastructural revolution and the accelerated development of the hospital’s permanent site. What many once considered an impossible dream became a visible reality through his courage, foresight, and determination. Massive projects including modern medical complexes, upgraded emergency facilities, improved theatre equipment, road networks, drainage systems, digital healthcare infrastructure, and specialized departments have emerged under his watch, giving NAUTH a completely new identity and global outlook.
Prof. Ugboaja’s administration also championed the transition from outdated analogue systems to modern digital healthcare operations through the implementation of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), improved ICT systems, and modernized hospital management structures. These reforms have significantly enhanced efficiency, patient management, service delivery, and institutional accountability.
Beyond infrastructure, Prof. Ugboaja OON has remained deeply committed to human capital development and staff welfare. His leadership style inspires productivity, discipline, innovation, and professionalism among healthcare workers. He understands that excellence in healthcare delivery begins with motivated personnel, and as such, he has consistently prioritized staff development, welfare packages, training opportunities, and institutional harmony.
His visionary ambition to position NAUTH among the top teaching hospitals in Nigeria is not mere rhetoric but a mission backed by strategic action plans, measurable milestones, and relentless execution. Under his stewardship, NAUTH has expanded its diagnostic and specialist capabilities, including the acquisition of advanced medical equipment such as dialysis systems, MRI facilities, orthopedic expansion projects, and specialized treatment centers.
Just a week ago, Prof Ugboaja took delivery of a newly acquired 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at the Radiology Department of the hospital, which was donated by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation Limited. For a man who knows where to go to get what, it was not surprising that erudite professor spotted NNPC Foundation Limited and followed up on them on the need to support the university, leading to the donation. The state of the art machine with supporting infrastructure such as radio-frequency shielding systems, chillers, backup power supply and specialised imaging accessories, also came with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and training for radiographers, radiologists and technical personnel to ensure sustainable operations.
Th CMD who spoke during the commissioning ceremony said the machine will bring world-class diagnostics to the doorstep of Nigerians, while revealing that the intervention by NNPC aligned with the 10-year strategic and development plan of the hospital; President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in ensuring good health for Nigerians.
Prof. Ugboaja’s excellence has not gone unnoticed. He has received widespread commendation from medical associations, government institutions, healthcare stakeholders, and community leaders for his transformative leadership. The Nigerian Medical Association described him as a visionary administrator, a tireless servant leader, and “Mr. No Mission Is Impossible” due to his ability to overcome challenges and deliver unprecedented achievements within a short period.
Indeed, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON represents the perfect fusion of intellect, competence, discipline, and visionary governance. His rise as one of Nigeria’s youngest Professors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology further underscores his academic brilliance and professional distinction.
