The 13th Edition of the Sardauna Cup roared to life yesterday, November 3, 2025, at the Metro Police Ground in Maiduguri, with enthusiastic supporters and well-wishers erupting in loud cheers..
The first match of the tournament featured Kano State vs. Bauchi State, which kicked off at 3:00 PM and ended in a 1–1 draw.
The opening ceremony was both glamorous and exciting, showcasing the excellent organization of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC). All participating states took part in a colorful match-past around the field, with Retired AIG Abdu Umar standing to honor each team as they passed, marking a show of respect before the official kickoff between Borno State (the host) and Plateau State, which signified the formal opening of the tournament.
The host team, Borno State Veterans, opened the scoring in the 17th minute, when Adam Ibn Yusuf (Abu Yusuf) delivered a brilliant cross that found Gaga, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. The center referee, Ali Wulari, immediately pointed to the center circle, confirming the goal. The first half ended with Borno leading 1–0.
In the second half, both teams made tactical adjustments that changed the tempo of the game. Borno’s Jesini Peter( The Golden Boy) dribbled past four Plateau players before slotting home the second goal, sealing a 2–0 victory for the Kanem Warriors.
Highlights of the Day include, Award of Excellence presented by Brigadier General Abdullahi to CP AM Bello, Official declaration of the tournament by the Special Guest of Honour, Retired AIG Abdu Umar and donations of ₦20,000 to all participating states, ₦10,000 each to the DJ and supporters’ club, and ₦50,000 to the organizers by the Borno State FA Chairman.
Also there was a well-coordinated match-past with all states dressed in full ceremonial kits as thousands of spectators thronged the venue to witness the event live.
